No single baseball play has gotten more coverage this season than Jacoby Ellsbury's steal of home against the Yankees in Fenway Park Sunday night -- and rightfully so, as stealing home is a really rare feat, especially these days. In the aftermath, it was particularly disgraceful to listen to Joe Morgan, on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball, repeatedly try to blame the play on Jorge Posada, the Yankees' catcher, due to the fact that a left-handed hitter was at the plate. As it turns out, Posada had actually warned Andy Pettitte, the Yankees' pitcher, that Ellsbury might try to swipe home.
"Be careful," Posada said. "Pay attention to him."Apparently, Posada's urging fell on deaf ears, because a few pitches later home was stolen. Let's examine the logistics of the play to prove it was clearly Pettitte's fault.
1. It is almost imperative to steal home against a left-handed pitcher, because once he goes into his windup, his back is turned to the runner. Most pitchers don't look up at their target until just before releasing the pitch, either, so there's nothing the catcher can do once the runner takes off. Pettitte is both a lefty and one who doesn't look at his target until late in the windup.
2. Posada has to receive the ball. I'm sure he did see Ellsbury barreling down the line before the pitch. What did Morgan want him to do? Start jumping up and down screaming, in order to get Pettitte's attention and hope to get a pitchout? He would then run the risk that Pettitte didn't see him until the last minute and risk a wild pitch, which would have caused more damage.
3. Ellsbury was far down the third base line and beginning to get a walking lead. Had Pettitte stepped off the rubber to take a look, he might have been able to pick Ellsbury off. You could say Posada should have called a throw-over, but the signal was already given by the time Ellsbury was in his walking lead. We're talking about a matter of seconds here. Plus, Posada had already told his pitcher to pay attention. He probably thought Pettitte was about to step off.
The play came down to two simple things. Ellsbury perfectly played his maneuver, and Pettitte blatantly ignored a speedster who was taking a huge lead from third base. I'm not going to accuse Morgan of being ignorant on the subject -- considering he stole a few bases in his Hall of Fame career -- but there's got to be some confusion or bias on his part to stake this claim. He's just a bad broadcaster, and casting any blame on Posada in the situation exposed that fact for the umpteenth time.

Being a Red Sox fan and at the game it was an incredible experience for 2 primary reasons. One 1st steal of home I've seen "live" in 45 years of going to Fenway...and I didn't have to listen to Joe Morgan!! Each year that he's re-hired I wonder what he has on ESPN management..he is unprepared and a bore..

Stealing home is one of the most exciting plays in baseball. I got to see Billy Hatchers steal home in I think 1994. Joe Morgan was a great ballplayer but a rotten announcer.Posada did all he could.

It's Joe Morgan - he always says something where he inserts his foot into his mouth.

Um ... I was trying to say the play was Pettitte's fault and he's white. Thus, your argument is inconsistent, typical of racial ones. You can't just pick and choose.

you dope. It has nothing to do with Morgan's color.
He is an inferior announcer, always has been since day one in the booth.
He could play, but he cannot lucidly or intelligently describe the game and his race is immaterial to the discussion of Ellsbury stealing home.

Pssst why didn't SOMEONE just call time out?? as long as he hadn't actually started the windup it would have been given and he could have quashed the steal?

If you watch the video even the 3rd basemen was way off 3rd. Even if Pettitte looked back there would have been no pick off, Jacoby just would have jogged back to the base.

The only stealing really being done at fenway was Joe Morgans air time as a broadcaster. Hes boring and impartial to everyone in the league other than his ancient reds team that was great KEYWORD "WAS" even though he refuses to recognize that Pete Rose Helped him be the hall of famer he is today. By the way that's another stolen scenario PETE ROSE. Save that topic 4 another day

The espn commentary was so bad i listened on the radio and got the action 10 seconds earlier. There's a 10 second delay on tv and the babble was driving me crazy. We're so lucky to have Jerry Remmy on nesn.

MOEGAN TALKS ALOT, BUT THINKS VERY LITTLE. OF COURSE YOU STEAL ON THE PITCHER. THE CATCHER CAN'T DO ANYTHING UNTIL HE GETS THE BALL.

Thank you Boston for three great games. Thank you also to Joe Morgan. We look forward to your thoughts on the game and explaining the hows and whys of the game. Two of the best in the booth are Joe Buck and Joe Morgan. Thanks to both and hope to hear you soon.
Jacoby Ellsbury did a great job. The whole team, from individual performances to all of the excitement. Varitek's Grand Slam, Mike Lowell's 6 RBIs and then there is YOUK, Youk, Youk.
We will all be watching the rest of the season.
Thank you from a Boston born living in Florida.

Greatest play I have seen so far this year. Even better that the Red Socks pulled it off against them high paid Yankee boys.
As for Morgan he is so full of himself it is pathetic. I may watch games he comments on, but the "mute" button is always on. I can see what is happening better than he can explain it to me. Patch

R U kidding? So now Boston is a small market team with a paltry payroll taking on the big, bad, high paid Yankees? I respect the Sox and their organization. But their fans are among the most ill-informed, nonsensical, beligerent idiots out there. Get a grip with reality Sox fans.

That little darling Ellsbury is a delight to watch. Go Red Sox. As for the Yankees: $$$$ don't buy you love or a winning team.
