Hurdle Gets Vote of Confidence (Sort Of)

Perhaps the Rockies are paying attention to how the odd managerial decision in Arizona has made the Diamondbacks worse. You see, the 'Backs ousted Bob Melvin after a bad start and replaced him with someone who has never managed before. As Ed Price pointed out in this morning's Starting Five, Arizona has gone 1-3 since, and has actually looked worse.

As the 2007 National League Champions scuffle out of the gate, yet again, manager Clint Hurdle has been rumored to be on the outs with Colorado brass. The Rockies don't appear desirous to head down the same path.
"To say he would be [fired after this homestand] would be inaccurate. If you make the change, what is going to be better? And we are not going to make change for change's sake," [Rockies owner Dick] Monfort said Monday in a phone interview. "If I felt it was going to make the difference in winning more games, we would do something. But I just don't think that's the case right now."
It does seem that Hurdle's job is safe, but that's not exactly a sparkling review from his employer. What if the owner of your company said something like that about the job you are doing?

While Monfort didn't explicitly say it, it would appear Hurdle is going to have some time to save his job. If things get worse, the Rockies could simply say enough is enough and can him. If the Rockies tread water on the field, Hurdle will just avoid a visit to the unemployment line until the offseason.

What we do know is that the Rockies aren't content with the job their manager is currently doing. Monfort didn't say they weren't firing Hurdle because they're happy with him as manager. He basically said they couldn't fire Hurdle because there weren't better alternatives right now. There will be in October and November when they have a chance to poach other staffs and interview candidates over the course of a few months.
