Mets' Putz to Miss 8-10 Weeks

J.J. PutzMets setup man J.J. Putz, a disappointment so far, will be out 8-10 weeks after undergoing surgery next week to remove a bone spur from his elbow.

A person who spoke to Putz told FanHouse that the reliever will have arthroscopic surgery Tuesday by Mets team doctor David Altchek in New York.

"It should be fairly simple," the person said. "Then six weeks of no throwing and 2-4 weeks to get ready."

That puts Putz's return in early-to-mid-August.

The Mets acquired Putz from the Mariners, who had been using him as their closer, in a December eight-player deal to serve as a dominant set-up man for Francisco Rodriguez. But in 29 appearances, Putz is 1-4 with a 5.22 ERA, with 19 walks and 19 strikeouts. His velocity is down about 5 mph to 91-92, and the sore elbow has robbed his split-finger pitch of its life.
