When the St. Louis Cardinals traded for Mark DeRosa over the weekend, it was basically the unofficial start of teams swapping players before the July 31 trade deadline. Traditionally teams wait for one big domino to fall before they start wheeling and dealing, so it's no surprise that the Yankees and Pirates have now worked out a deal amongst themselves. In a Tuesday morning deal, the Yankees acquired Eric Hinske from the Pirates for two minor leaguers.
Going to Pittsburgh in the deal are right-hander Casey Erickson and outfielder Eric Fryer as rumors swirl that this won't be the last move the Buccos will be making.
As for this deal, word is that the Yankees will only be paying half of the $800,000 Hinske is still owed for this season, and that could be quite a steal for the Bombers. Adding Hinske gives them options in the outfield and will also allow them to give Alex Rodriguez more rest over at third base while keeping Ramiro Pena in the minors and allowing him to develop further.
The Yankees are the fourth AL East team that Hinske has now played for, and he's been a part of the last two AL pennant-winning teams in Boston and Tampa Bay, so maybe the Yankees are hoping he can bring some of that World Series mojo with him to the Bronx.

Can someone tell me... is Matsui's contract up at the end of this season? The Hinske deal is a good idea. Doesn't he also play 1B?

Yes, Matsui's contract is done after this season. It's pretty doubtful the Yankees re-up with him.
Hinske has played 1B 176 games in his career -- 43 times in '07, 11 times last year, 6 times thus far this season.

The only thing I know about Hinske is that a lot of the younger Rays looked up to him and sought his advice. That said, he ought to be a good locker room presence.

What we needed was a good starter. Chein has been pitching hurt and his record shows it. He should go on the DL and let Phil Hughes throw the ball. Hinske could help some but he isn't what we needed right now.

I like the trade but the Yankees need starting pitching desperately. Hopefully Cashman can make it happen.

It's not a bad trade , but being a Red Sox fan I think the Yankees need a starting pitcher or two and someone in the bullpen to help Mo Rivera. Cashman isnt that good of a GM either. They couldve gotten Vlad Guerrero and ended up with Gary Sheffield instead a few years ago. Also gave Arod far more money then anyone else was going to give him after the rat opted out of his contract. Spent too much on CC Sabathia (good but breaks down and isnt the best pitcher by a long shot) AJ Burnett....how many times has he pitched a full season? MT was a good pick up and only time will tell if the money was worth it. Nothing wrong with how much money the Yankees spend, I just think it could be spent better

FYI -- Cashman really wanted Vlad and Steinbrenner went behind his back and solidified the Sheffield deal instead. The longer version of the story is in the book "The Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty" by Buster Olney.

For Dim Wit dewit202. Just to let another so called real Red Sox fan know Damon didn't start with the Red Sox he started with Kansas City Royals. So the Dead Sox Nation had the sloppy seconds. I thank the Good Lord for making me a Yankees fan. It's a privlage and honor. Just win baby.

The Yankees is a dominating team due to Reggie Jackson first of all! With their new addition, Eric, they will continue to be unstoppable. But Reggie Jackson himself has set the bar and that lets me know that he will most definitely do the same playing poker this September!
