Starting Five is our wrapup of the previous day's baseball action, with a quick nod to what is ahead. You Oughta Know ...
That the Red Sox probably did not sleep well Tuesday night.
Boston held a nine-run lead in Baltimore with nine outs to go. Then the Orioles exploded for five runs on seven hits in the seventh inning and five runs on six hits in the eighth, handing Jonathan Papelbon his second blown save of the season. When George Sherrill struck out Jason Bay with two on in the top of the ninth, it finished off a wild 11-10 victory for the O's.
[Said Orioles manager Dave Trembley:] "It was the shootout at the OK Corral except it was Camden Yards."
And it was the biggest comeback win in Baltimore history.
"It was a weird game, a terrible loss for us," Dustin Pedroia said. "That's upsetting. Things just kind of spiraled on us."From the Trainer's Room ...
"We just had no answer," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "We went through everybody. Nothing we did worked."
Adrian Gonzalez, 22 games shy of the Padres' team record for consecutive games played, left Tuesday's game with a strained right knee suffered on a slide into third base.
"It's too soon to tell," said [manager Bud] Black. "We'll see how it resolves over night. There's some soreness. He tweaked some muscles around the knee. We'll see how it sets up over night."Numbers Game ...
Hanley Ramirez drove in four runs, giving him a Marlins-record nine straight games with at least one RBI – and 21 total over that span. With 29 RBI in June, Ramirez was second in the majors to Albert Pujols (32). Pujols' two homers Tuesday for St. Louis made him the first player ever to hit at least 30 home runs in each of his first nine big-league seasons.
In Their Own Words ...
"The people who run this team are businessmen and they have a plan. I'm sure they believe in their plan and I hope it does work. We've made a lot of trades during the time I've been here but none of the trades ever seem to work out. We're still making more trades and we haven't had a winning season the whole time I been here. Hopefully, we'll eventually win. After it's gone on this long, though, it is fair to wonder if it's ever going to work." – Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson after Pittsburgh made two trades Tuesday
Advance Scouting ...
The Rangers and Angels send their aces to the hill for the rubber game of their series in Arlington (8:05 PM ET), with Texas hoping to close back within a 1/2 game. Rangers right-hander Kevin Millwood, 4-1 with a 1.30 ERA in June, faces Jered Weaver, who has won five of his six past starts and has a career 2.64 ERA against Texas.

I saw 4 plays the should have been called out But never was. O's player running to first base ON THE GRASS. out of the baseline. Never called Out at Home plate Called safe. DEFENTLY OUT at 3RD base in the 8th inning UMP LIED AGAIN called him safe AND i DON'T BLAME Papelbon That caller in the 8th Inning was CLEARLY a strike UMPIRE ONCE AGAIN LIED THREW HIS MOUTH I say these Umps Had to be betting on this game. OROILES ONLY WIN cause UMPIRES LIED THREW THERE TEETH FOR THEM TO WIN

I hope the Umpires in last night Sox and O's game made enough money on the side. (betting) cause Clearly that game was rigged. Youk had the O's playerout at 3rd base Umpires totally Ignored it. they lied. Clearly The O's player was out at 1st base Running out of the lines ON THE GRASS once again UMPIRES never called him out. And I don't blame Papelbon for being pissed Clearly in the bottom of the 8th It was a Strike NEVER CALLED CAUSE UMPIRES HAD MONEY BET ON THIS GAME. You could clearly see that.
Lucky I wasn't at that game I would have Threw at Bat at the Umps head and yelled at him and tell him to stop fixing the game

First off, it was a close play and that's how it goes. How about the "strike" to Pie just before that that was about a foot outside. It just happens. Also, that out made no difference, the O's already had the lead at that point.

And wow, boston fans really are whiny. It's one game, you are in first, you have 2 World Series wins in the last 10 years. You lost a game because the O's hit your relief pitching extremely well last night. Is this how you guys are everytime your precious redsox lose? It had to be someone elses fault, someone was payed?

*edit - maybe not all boston fans. sorry to those who understand that losses happen (we're used to it in baltimore), I just get tired of people who blame the umps/refs for everything, and can't just say, "eh, well too bad, hopefully we can get the next one".

I'm a Red Sox fan. They had a 10-1 lead . The only ones at fault for losing that game are the players. In the grand scheme of things its only one loss so it isnt a big deal. Dont blame the umps. Lester got some strike calls that were questionable the night before. Its the human element of the game. Go Sox!

I'm a Sox fan and frankly the pen usually the best in MLB just fell apart. Smoltz was going so well it's too bad they just didn't leave him in. Every team messes up ocassionally....at least it wasn't one of those 22 to 4 games and I'm glad it was the O's...they need a break and their loyal fans sitting in the rain got one.

Love it. This was greatness. To the Sox fans who possess a little respect, great game, and who would want it any other way in these division series? To the ones babbling about umps on a payroll, trust me, Angelos has shelled out wayyyyyyyyyyyyy, i repeat WAYYYYYYYYYYY more money than Henry's ass ever has as far as paying or overpaying players what theyre truly worth is concerned, hed def buy some umps if that were possible.
The laughter is for the idiots who call Camden Fenway South. Stay home, clownholes.

The season is a long marathon not a sprint.
Usually, the calls even out, but, from a home team vantage point -- when they lose, the OTHER
TEAM received all the calls and we were ROBBED.
RED SOX fans seem to have more biased fans than anyone else. They should never lose on close calls only the other team. Their line drives should always find the gaps and when the other team does it--they were fortunate. Excuses when they lose, pumping their chests, arms in the sky, and fist jerking when they win. Lousy in losses, and very ungracious when they win.
Even Pabelbum isn't infallible, can't win all the time, but act as though you have respect for the game.
It is what makes baseball a great game.

Spoken like a true jealous Yankee fan. Excuse me if you tally up the comments above from the Sox fans you will see a 9 to 2 ratio of gracious to ungracious, and actually the 2 complaining pieces were by the same poster. You my friend should get over your Red- Sox-Envy and relax and enjoy the game. Difficult I understand with 8 - 0 to live with, but try.

You can't count or read.
There is no jealousy, just stating the obvious, most Sox fans are HOMERS , ask the Orioles fa

Why do I get the feeling that the yearly Sox swoon has started a bit early? I hear media types state that Ortiz is back and that Drew is doing good. Um, are we watching the same team. Ortiz is DONE and Drew has been a complete and total BUST. He's being paid $15 mil a year to stand their with the bat on his shoulder until he gets "his pitch". Tek is his typical, can't hit squat self and Bay has been watching everything go by for strikes lately. I think you just may see 5 new position players by next year.
maybe it's time to trade for good young talent and give them a few years.

boston fans do live in fantasy land... they do think that all close call games should automaticly go to to the redsox.. they cry harder than any fan when a call gos agaianst them. they win 2 world series in 86 years and all of a sudden they think they are the new dynasty in baseball..they trash teams that dominated them for centuries just because they got a few wins off of them in any given season. not very gracious fans,, especially the fans of today in boston.. they remind me of those soccer fans from england and ireland... grow up boston fans. stop acting like hoolagans and big mouths. support your teams with a little more class... the baseball world is watching your moronic acting on tv as well as your stupid post... evertime a boston redsox sfan post its always negative or disrespectful comments on other teams or players. you win 2 ws and all of a sudden you think your experts or a dynasty... look at your team... your are not yet a dynasty........
