Everything seemed to be going swimmingly for the Cubs. They were coming off of three wins in four games against the Brewers over the weekend, which threw the Brewers into some turmoil, and the Cardinals just received word that Mark DeRosa will head to the DL with a wrist injury. The other shoe dropped Tuesday afternoon, though, when the Cubs learned that Ryan Dempster will miss his scheduled start and several more after breaking his toe leaping out of the dugout celebrating the Cubs' win over Milwaukee on Sunday. Dempster says he's going to miss his next three starts (two before the All-Star break and one after) but the Cubs' trainer says he could miss up to a month, which would probably mean another start or two after that.
"Sunday after the game I was coming out of the dugout and stepping over the top of the railing there, I was sitting up on the ledge, and I caught my left foot on the rail as I was coming over and it just spun me around and slammed me into the ground. When I did it, I thought I just ripped my nail back on my foot. Unfortunately, the result wasn't very funny. If you ask Derrek Lee, he thought it was pretty funny, because the first person I saw when I looked up was D-Lee, and he was laughing. I'm sure it looked hysterical from his angle."Carlos Zambrano will take his place in the rotation on short rest and Kevin Hart will be called up from Triple-A Iowa to start Wednesday and presumably fill out the rotation until Dempster returns. Hart's made a few uninspiring appearances with the Cubs over the past three years, but he's been solid with Iowa this year, racking up 57 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings, though he's only made six starts in 22 appearances with them.

seriously jimbo, that is your contribution? I hope you are not a Sox fan
I am also not a Cub fan, but Dempster is one of those guys that is hard to root against. He worked hard to comeback from injuries and a long stint as a bullpen pitcher to become a quality starter again. He is always on available for interviews and is refreshingly honest about what is happening with the team.
This could possibly hurt the Cubs more than people think. Dempster's stats are down from last year, but he still is getting quality starts and a broken toe could put him out longer than the he and the Cubs are saying. We all know the history of how accurately the Cubs are with their injury prognosis.

It's a wonder that more players aren't injured when they jump up and run into a pile of fellow players...childish behavior by people making millions each year....this player is a jerk and it couldn't happen to a more appropriate person. I'd like to see a few more on the DL from this type of activity..

I'm never happy when anyone is hurt. Maybe this will bring attention to a stupid tradition. Why can't atheletes at least "act" like adults. He brought his injury on himself acting like a four year old. No excuse.

Managers and coaches ought to fine their players for getting injured off the playing field, including dugouts in this case. Seriously though, athletes appear to be accident prone and injured from the most stupidous reasons that we couch potatoes know of. Especially pitchers who are quite clumsy to start with.

a 1- 2 record with 13 earned and 15 walked over his last 4 starts and I'm thinking maybe we should break all his toes
he was 10 - 3 last year on this date and his ERA was a full point lower.
it just goes with what I think is frustrating about this - when players aren't focused they get stupid injuries, perform poorly and eventually find ways to wind up out of the game... He has a very good excuse and his daughter is definitely more important - but I think it's pretty obvious that this will not be a good year for Dempster...he understandably isn't focused.
the same holds true for just about everyone and this year I've been mad at an out of focus cubs team. That is the manager and the GM's problem to handle

IF i was an owner thats the kind of exuberance i WANT to see from my players...I WANT to know they get excited about their job !
WTF the m atter with me eh?
