Starting Five: No Brotherly (or Any) Love For Cincinnati Pitching in Philly

Josh Roenicke Cincinnati RedsStarting Five is our wrapup of the previous day's baseball action, with a quick nod to what is ahead.

You Oughta Know ...
That the Phillies' record book needs editing.

In Monday's 22-1 home rout of Cincinnati, Philadelphia:

• Set a modern (post-1900) franchise mark for margin of victory;

• Tied the team record with 10 first-inning runs that included three homers;

• And scored its most runs ever at Citizens Bank Park and most as a franchise since June 1985.

It was also the worst loss in Reds history, breaking a record set on July 26, 1892 – during the Benjamin Harrison administration.

Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto became the first pitcher to allow nine or more runs while getting fewer than three outs since Jason Jennings in 2007, for Houston against San Diego.
"That's the worst I can remember on a baseball field," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. ...

"You always think it can't get worse," Baker said. "My daddy told me don't think that because it can get worse. And it got worse."
From the Trainer's Room ...
Florida shortstop Hanley Ramirez, voted to start for the NL in the All-Star Game, admitted he may not be able to play in it. Then again, Ramirez – who has not started since Saturday because of a sore right hip flexor – might play today.
"We've got over 75 games left. I don't want it to get worse and have to go on the DL (disabled list) and miss a week and a half," he said. "I just want to take a couple of days and see how I feel. Maybe in two or three days."
Numbers Game ...
At 21 years, 155 days old, Oakland left-hander Brett Anderson became the second-youngest pitcher in the past 50 years to shut out Boston at Fenway Park on two hits or fewer. Felix Hernandez threw a one-hitter at Fenway on April 11, 2007 – three days after his 21st birthday. Anderson was also the first visiting lefty with a complete-game shutout in almost 13 years, since Milwaukee's Scott Karl in September 1996.

In Their Own Words ...
"In the past, I was so worried about guys not scoring - trying to make perfect pitches, and trying to get three outs with one pitch. This year, I told myself to bear down and focus on the hitter, not let it get out of hand." – Colorado's Jason Marquis, who went eight innings in a 1-0 defeat of Washington to extend his scoreless innings streak to 17 and become the majors' first 11-game winner

Advance Scouting ...
The NL Central's top two teams open a three-game series in Milwaukee (8:05 PM ET); the Cardinals lead the Brewers by one game. Adam Wainwright, 14th in the league with a 3.32 ERA, goes for St. Louis while Milwaukee turns to Yovani Gallardo, who is sixth in ERA at 2.75. Both have an 8-5 record. Wainwright has been tough on the Brewers in two meetings this year, holding them to seven hits while striking out 16 in 15 innings. Gallardo shut out the Cards for eight innings on May 25.
