2009 AL Home Run Derby Contestants
With the Home Run Derby taking place on Monday night in St. Louis as part of MLB's festivities for the All-Star Game, we've been left wondering exactly who would be representing the American League. The National League announced its participants last week, and now, finally, we know who will be swinging for the fences for the AL.

Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers, Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins, Brandon Inge of the Detroit Tigers and Carlos Pena will all be taking their cuts for the American League. At first glance the American League lineup lacks the luster of the National League, which is sending out Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, Adrian Gonzalez and Prince Fielder, but don't be fooled.

Carlos Pena has never taken a swing in his life in which he wasn't trying to hit a home run, so he won't have to adjust very much, and with a swing as beautiful as Joe Mauer's, he may surprise a few folks as well.
