Over the last few years as blogs have entered the mainstream for people seeking information on the internet, there's been a lot of controversy over what's kosher and what isn't with blogs. Whether people are getting upset about a blog saying they think a player may be using steroids without concrete proof, or posting pictures of athletes out at a bar with a bottle of Jack Daniels in their hand and a bevy of beauties on their arm, there are plenty of examples of blogs dancing back and forth over the line of what's responsible reporting and irresponsible. But don't worry, this isn't another post about which side is right, and which side is wrong. No, this is just a post being put up on a blog to let the world know that it's not just bloggers who step over the line from time to time.
Take The Riverfront Times for instance.
With the All-Star Game taking place in St. Louis this week, the paper put out a handy guide for fans in St. Louis and those visiting letting them know everything they could ever want to about baseball in St. Louis. Of course, they also decided to post the home addresses of both current and former Cardinals baseball players, and now they've had their credentials revoked by MLB.
Last Thursday afternoon I got a call from Brian Bartow, the St. Louis Cardinals' director of media relations. Bartow said the team had seen and loved the Riverfront Times Guide to All-Star Week, a special supplement this paper had published the previous day -- all except the part where we revealed the home addresses of some current and former Redbirds luminaries. That excerpt is from a blog entry by Tom Finkel of The Riverfront Times. He calls the entry an apology, but after reading the entire thing, it becomes clear the only thing he's apologizing for is possibly causing Pujols to have a sub-par All-Star performance.
The players, Bartow said, were particularly peeved, especially Pujols. So upset were they, Bartow told me, that the ballclub felt it had no option but to instruct Major League Baseball to revoke the credentials they'd granted Riverfront Times to cover the All-Star Game, and to rescind our credentials to cover the team over the course of the regular season.
He doesn't seem remorseful at all for publishing Albert Pujols' address -- he even goes as far as to give readers directions on how to find it themselves -- along with other Cardinals luminaries like Ozzie Smith, Al Hrabowsky and the great Stan Musial. Instead he says it's his right thanks to freedom of speech, and though that may be true, it doesn't make it right.
We've seen in the past that athletes can have altercations with overzealous fans and stalkers from time to time. Monica Seles was stabbed during a tennis match. To publish the home address of an athlete, or anyone in the spotlight, is wholly irresponsible.
I'm not saying that anybody is going to attack Pujols or any of the other players who were listed because of this, but if somebody wanted to, it would be a whole lot easier now wouldn't it?
A person's home is their home. It is not public domain. If you want to show up at Busch Stadium and let Pujols know how much you think he sucks, that's your right. But much like when you go home after a long day at work, Pujols deserves his privacy at his own home with his family.
Maybe Finkel should publish his own address in tomorrow's paper so any players who were upset by this can go over there and voice their displeasure personally.

Process of elimination, neighbors talking, workers at the home... some information on athletes addresses will get out...but who would think it is okay to simply help the writhing masses by putting the actual address of athletes in a guide or the paper? Do we actually need to help stalkers and theives out? We have had some well known home invasions of athletes with shootings, stabbings and a death due to people knowing that a athlete lived at a certain place and people guessing that they were out of town or at a game, and the houses were occupied with the family, friends, or the athlete themselves there. How high does your IQ have to be to think that this is not okay?

Some background on the RFT . . . .
I didn't know people in the StL area actually still picked up the damn thing, much less read it. It's pretty much material as if it were presented in blog form, if it had to be printed in a weekly newspaper.
Those of us who live in the area know why few people read it . . . it's given away, for free, to anyone who wants it. Usually the stands are at Metro Area bars, restaurants, convenience stores, etc. Half (probably even more than that, usually) of each week's issue consists of advertisements for local events, happenings at local bars, penis enhancement methods, titty bars, medical tests at local hospitals and the like. Actual MATERIAL inside the paper, while almost always entertaining, is pretty much their filler, and an excuse to make them look like they're a real newspaper.
While I don't blame the players for getting pissed off, I'm quite honestly shocked that anyone found out about it, because I didn't know anyone could find anything between all those ads for titty bars and penis enhancements and such.
With all that being said . . . there's little reason to believe Tom Finkel will be fired, because he either really IS ashamed of himself and isn't letting it on because of the "Company Line", or he is following the ACTUAL "Company Line" to a letter and therefore absolved from blame. That's the way it is with these types of publications.

Donut King, maybe you should stick to simple tasks like eating deep-fried dough and studying penis-enlargement ads, since it seems that actually reading the paper you disparage might be too taxing; plainly, you don't know what you're talking about.
Yes, in between the ads for titty bars and hair removal joints you will find real journalism, put out by a talented staff every week. They also seem to have fun doing it.
The ads are what keep the paper free - moron - and lucky for you it's as easy to pick up at the local library as it is the nearest QuikTrip. How democratic is that?
The RFT wins accolades and awards each and every year from the national media, and is the only thing St. Louis has in terms of intelligent, cutting edge reporting and storytelling.
Now get off your donut ass and go eat some vegetables.

So, Rosebud, how long have you worked for the RFT? LOL!!

My thoughts exactly, LaJuan. It's as if I disparaged their (otherwise) good newspaper by saying there were a bunch of ads in it. It's as if I don't know how newspapers can afford to operate!
By the way Rosebud . . . Charles Foster Kane is not coming back to you. I also actually don't eat as many doughnuts as you think I do, you jackass.

Please print Tom Finkel's Address so that all the baseball players can come over with their bats and show him how to play ball.

What's the big deal. My address is in the phone book. If someone comes to my house that I don't want to talk to... then I don't open the door. You would be very surprised what you can find out about people on the internet if you just knew where to look.

Use your head...
Anyone knows that these players are mega-rich... and out of town on road trips for 5 months out of the year.
Their families are home while the player is out of town... What about the sickos that think they could kidnap one of Albert Pujols kid's and get a big payday?
It's a crazy, completely irresponsible thing to do... The newspaper ought to be boycotted by every advertiser they have...

Go online to their county tax website and you will probably find the floor plan for their house. Some counties.... not all.

Really dude, are you serious. You think most athletes are in the phone book? Or for that matter anyone remotely famous. Heck I'm trying to hold on to little stuff I have and I've never listed my phone number or address. Any how, if they rang the bell and no one answered who's gonna stop them when they knock down the door for the home invasion? Yeah, you can find a lot of stuff on the internet...but some robbers ain't taking the time...but if you just give them the address they can skip step b and c in invading their homes while they are on the road. Also some do buy stuff in other families names so some of the crooks can't get the info online. Seriously, not to be on this like this, It really wasn't a smart thing to do, and I can't defend anyone, esp in this day and age...it hasn't been Mayberry in America for a really long time. Peace.

The River Front Times was, at one time, an alternative to the St. Louis dailies. When it was sold to an out of state outfit it went down hill. I don't know of anyone who reads it.

The Riverfront Times is a shit hole paper.
Everyone in StL knows that they have to give it away - because if they tried to sell it they would go out of business.
It has no redeeming socail value or journalistic integrity.
The response to criticism? Filthy insults.
That sums up that rag perfectly.
