According to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times, there was a trade in the works which would have been the biggest deadline deal in recent memory. It was no secret the Red Sox were interested in Adrian Gonzalez, and there were some rumors circulating that they also coveted Felix Hernandez. They ended up trading for Victor Martinez, but that was -- according to Baker -- only because a three-team blockbuster deal was vetoed by Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik. The proposed deal? The Red Sox would have received King Felix by bringing in the Padres as a third team. The Mariners would have received Gonzalez, Clay Buchholz and two other prospects from the Red Sox. The Padres would have gotten back upwards of four top-notch prospects along with Brandon Morrow.
The fact that Seattle scoffed at the deal shows their loyalty to and belief in Felix Hernandez. It would be incredibly tempting to swap him out for Gonzalez, Buchholz and some other prospects -- especially after the Bill Bavasi-trading-for-Erik Bedard debacle. But Felix is only 23 years old and he's already one of the best pitchers in the majors. So far this season he's 12-4 with a 2.78 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He's on pace to shatter his previous career highs in pretty much every category. There are over a decade of All-Star seasons left in that golden right arm, and the Mariners control him through 2011. Thus, it's likely they'd need an absolute killing for him right now.
Considering their ability to turn down such a hefty package, they'll probably see much better offers -- ones where they won't have to part with three prospects in addition to Felix -- in the next year or two as long as they are willing to listen. It's going to be interesting to see how the Mariners progress in terms of both their on-field product and ability to sign Felix long-term in the next year.
If strides are made in neither department, the Roy Halladay sweepstakes from this past month could be made to look like child's play compared to the King Felix fury at the 2010 deadline. We're talking about a top-five pitcher in the league for the next 12 years, and the Mariners won't be stupid enough to let him walk for free.

The Sox kids are vastly overrated. Regardless of what the Boston Sports media "wannabes" think, Buchholz is a "back of the rotation" starter at best and Tito and Ferrell have screwed him up. Bowden has a very unattractive hitch in his throw that I'm not very fond of. I follow the Sox and there's nobody in their farm system that anyone should be "ga-ga" over. They have been lucky with Papalbon and Ellsbury and Pedroia was a totally unexpected, "gee, look what we found" player. In fact, take Papelbon and Pedroia out of the equation and the Sox haven't come up with a real homegrown "superstar" in years.

papam 11, you're either a Yankee fan or an idiot. But they are both the same. The Red Sox got 'lucky' with Dustin, Ellsbury, Youk in their farm system? lol. 'Gee, look what we found' players? You are a total idiot. Since the Red Sox GM,Theo Epstein, the Red Sox GM and President came in 2003, the Red Sox have one of the most succeful Farm Systems in MLB, and certainly one of the deepest.
You seem to forget a few names...like a pitcher by the name of Jon Lester, and one of the best young relievers in baseball in Daniel Bard. How about Chris Carter, Lars Anderson, Jonathan Van Every, Michael Bowden, Jed Lowrie, Justin Masterson, John Reddick.....just to name a few.
You follow the Red Sox farm system? Ya,right. Try doing it while you're off your medication.

Clay is a great AAA pitcher and other then the fluke no hitter I dont see much in him on the major league level . Was watching a game the other night and they were talking about how he was shaking off Varitek's signals on a regular basis. As anyone can see by his results that certainly isnt the way to go.Perhaps if he grows up a a little he'll amount to something but there is obviously a reason the Sox are willing to deal him when they need another starter.

Papam, you are a moron and a tool. Pedroia was a second round pick. Just because he's small doesn't mean they lucked into the pick. James is right, they have about as many home grown prospects as anyone in the league. You say to "take away Pedroia and Papelbon". Well, although it makes no sense to take away a perennial all star and an MVP, even if you do that, you still have 2 all stars in Lester and Youkilis. (I won't even mention Hanley Ramirez, maybe the 2nd best player in the NL).

Okay, so what was in the Mariners "trade central" Kool-Aid when Zduriencik nixed a deal that would have brought them Gonzalez, Buchholz and two top prospects for Hernandez? Yet he traded Washburn for ?????
