Major League Baseball has suspended Detroit Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello and Boston Red Sox infielder Kevin Youkilis five games each for their fight Tuesday night at Fenway Park. Both players initially appealed the decisions, but have since dropped them and will begin serving their suspensions Wednesday night.
Youkilis charged Porcello after being hit in the back by a pitch.
MLB determined Porcello threw intentionally at Boston's Victor Martinez and Youkilis.
Also, Detroit pitcher Edwin Jackson was fined "for his aggressive actions during the bench-clearing incident."

Tigers players have been hit more times this year than you can count and Miguel Cabrera was also hit twice this series by a Red Sox pitcher but they all have had enough class not to throw a tantrum over it, unlike Youklis.

Pitchers get a free pass in the AL. Besides, 5 games for pitcher is not equivalent to 5 games for position players. So Portabella misses one start, big deal. Youka out 5 games means a lot.

Uke is lucky he didn't get 10. He charged the mound. He threw his helmet. He got body slammed. He deserved it.

Suspending Youkilis is plain WRONG. He shouild follow every appeal necessary to vindicate himself. Shame on MLB. I won't be watching the Sox anytime soon.

Youk deserved all that and more, but Porcello got HOSED! In fact, Youk should be tossed from the league for being SUCH A PANSY THAT A LITTLE 20-YEAR-OLD TOSSED HIM AROUND LIKE A RAG DOLL!

Porcella is lucky it's not me that he hit. Next time up against him and my bat would find it's way toward his knees. Oooops! How many more times does Youk have to get hit before HE retaliates? 5 games each? Youk loses out on 5 "starts" and Porcella misses just one? Oh, yeah, that's fair.
Watson is an idiot.

If Porcello had INTENTIONALLY thrown at Youkilis, the ump would have tossed him right then. There was no idication the umpire, the man there that has been there for the entire game, felt it was intentional.
What is Porcello supposed to do? He tried to get away but had no alternative but defend himself. Youkilis should get 5 games for charging the mound & 3 games for throwing equipment which if it had hit the pitcher in the arm or the hand could have put him on the DL if not done more serious damage.
The Sox throw at more batters than anyone yet when they get hit they candy *** out & throw a hissy fit!

Youkilis is a thug and should be gone for 20 games. The pitcher should not be suspended at all. The ump had no intention of throwing him out, or even issuing a warning. MLB is such a skank league.

Youk is an example of extreme poor sportsmanship! I don't think Porcello meant to hit him but, even if he did the response was very immature and poor sports. I loved the fact that Porcello flipped him down! I honestly don't think Porcello should have been punished at all. I feel that the umps were obviously pro Sox and shamefully so. There were no warnings at all! Cabby was hit and injured, did they warn the Sox pitcher?? NO! It is part of the game to push the hitter back, sometimes they get hit, most of those times it is unintentional. The Tigers apid dearly for this, Porcello was on and they had to put in a rookie--cold off the bench! One of their best bats was hit by a pitch and cannot play! youk is out for 5 games?? So what, Lowell came in and blasted the Tigers. A big scam by the officials and I hope that karma comes back after this series and the Sox never make the playoffs!!!!I think this stinks bad and I think this whole series is flawed because of the umps favoring the home team!

The real culprit is Francona. He has alwaways thrown at the other team's most productive hitter.
He throws at Cabrera the first game, and then the second game. Youkilis gets hit both times in retailation by the Tigers and Leyland.
The old time guys like Layland doesn't start stuff like Francona does; but, they protect their own when a jerk like Francona does something dumb.
He did it last year against the Rays. That is why Jackson was hot under the collar. He remembered how the Sox threw at Langoria.
Francona threw at AROD in June twice just after he got off the DL. The Sox won all their games against the Yanks and were winning that game big.
Why did he have Penny throw at Arod?
The benches were warned, so Gerardi bid his time.
He hit Pedroia, wrong guy---should have been Varitek, this last Thursday.
Then he throws at Texeira and Arod twice more.
Francona is going to get you killed Youkilis.
He is the instigator and a headhunter, go after him, you big wimp or drop the bat and helmet and go directly to first like all professional player should do. When Arod got hit twice, he dropped his bat, didn't mouth off, and went to first.
Most fans might despise Arod, but, give him credit this past week. He didn't act like the pussy Youkilis.

Hey the solution is real simple of a pitcher hits a batter the team that hit the batter should automatically lose the DH and force the pitcher to bat. After the pitcher gets beaned a few times I bet his control gets better...

Mr. Tiger18 - You are exactly right on the money!
Francona isn't a professional baseball manager. He's just an idiot with an idiot mentality. Yuke, set the idiot straight before you or one of your teammates ends up on the DL.

Here's an idea, turn the other cheek, take your base and be bigger than the idiot pitcher. As for the benches, you could show some control and let the two idiots fight if they insist. If one of them gets hurt, then they brought it on themselves. They should not be so selfish as to put their physical well being at risk, which in turn puts the team at risk. Instead of joining in the fray, put them to shame when they return to the dugout and stop this childish behavior. After all, these are supposed to be grown men, professionals, who get paid WAY TOO MUCH money to play a game for themselves and not for the love of the game. We need better examples in this game and not these thugs. Grow up folks.

So if Youkalis doesn't charge, the pitcher obviously wouldn't have been suspended. But since he did charge, and the pitcher body slammed Youk out of self defence he gets 5 games too? Man, that's some f'd up logic there MLB. Its almost as intelligent as giving the winner of the all star game home field advantage.

Dont jump all over me because i'm going to state upfront that i'm a Sox fan. As soon as Kevin threw his helmet it shouldve been no less then a 10 game suspension. But what do you expect with the clowns that hand out punishments. AJ Burnett gets 5 games for throwing behind a hitter, Josh Beckett gets 6 for throwing over a hitter, and yet Matt Garza is allowed to hit Mark Teixeira and say he did it on purpose, and he only gets a fine. It's a joke
