It's now official. The New York Mets announced Tuesday that Johan Santana will need surgery on his left elbow and miss the rest of the season. According to the team's release, Santana saw medical director Dr. David Altchek and it's been decided he'll need arthroscopic surgery to clean out some bone chips in his left elbow.
The good news, if there's any good news in a situation like this, is that Santana is expected to be ready for spring training next season.
In a season that has been marked by injuries for the Mets, this is just the latest blow. Santana is the 12th member of the Mets to go on the disabled list this season, joining an All-Star cast that includes David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes and just about anybody that's gotten within 100 feet of Citi Field this season.

Good! He snubbed Minnesota by leaving. He didn't think that being a fan favorite and being a millionaire in Minnesota was good enough. So this is a well deserved payback.

Mets are the worst team in baseball.Philadelphia is the class of their division with an exciting team like Florida and the always well managed Braves. Also at least Washington has guys who can hit the ball out of the park if nothing else. Thanks Omar keep on running back to Latin America to pick up damaged goods.P.O.S.= METS

It's a sad day for the human race when someone is glad to see an injury of a star player. The Mets have been my team since 1962. This is only a bump in the road. Free agency here we come.

The METS had basically all their star players on the DL this year - that being said, the "B" Team has held up well ... Cora, Pagan, Murphy all have done great jobs ... yes, we're out of the playoff running, but next year when our entire year is healthy, the NL East better be ready, cause we're taking it all ... now I'm just rooting for anyone to beat Philly - because they are a bunch of low class players.

To Leon twins traded Santana in the last year of his contract without going into free agency because they didn't want to a: they already knew his market value was more than they wanted to even consider and b: they had up and coming clone Liriano who had tommy john surgery and doesn't look like he will ever be the same. And last but certainly not least they had two other young players to eventually worry about paying big money to Mauer and Morneau!

kineticknine is right. Santana didn't snub us(Twins). He was traded, and by the looks of it, just in the nick of time. He has not been nearly as productive on the Mets, although lack of run support could be a cause as well. I was more disturbed by the loss of Hunter, he's my fav player and he was tearing it up for the Angels this year. Oh well, I'm happy with Mauer and Morneau.

I think the twins would've been much better to accept Boston's deal for Santana instead of the Mets, none of the mets players sent over have been great yet.

cpharlee, with the exception of the last two months, Johan actually been very productive for us. The Mets gave him the shoddiest run support last year and and this year when he was effective. In fact, last year, if it hadn't been for the Mets bullpen, who blew 7 leads for him, he would have been a 23-game winner.

The Twins offered Santana a very large contract and had lots of options and other things added including commercials etc Santana turned it down and wanted to go free agency talks. The Twins decided then to trade him and at least try to get something out of all of it. I do not know how a person can turn down that kind of money that was offered him. Grant it, it wasn't as much as the Mets want to spend, but still, Multi Million dollar package over 7 years, with special added things, geeze. I think that Minnesota would have given him the key to the state too. lol

They do not, I think the Angels have a better lineup than the Cards, the most potent are the yankees, angels, red sox, and then national league teams...

Pujols, Holliday, Ludwick, DeRosa, Rasmuss, Molina...It is like murderers row... The Mets are a huge mess. The Cards pitching is even awesome Carpenter And Wainwright?? best one two punch in baseball certainly better than anything the Angels have to offer...

it looks like the santana trade was a bust for both teams involved.mets for getting the best pitcher in baseball, but near the end of his dominance, twins for getting a exciting centerfielder who may never deliver.however, its never right to want a player to get hurt. nobody deserves to be injured. santana often said he would prefer to stay in minnesota, but the business end would not allow it. he's a class act who plays the game the way it should be played.

kineticknine is right the Twins figured they had a younger version of Santana in Liriano. I don`t know if he will be as good as he looked that year. The Twins do need to sign both Mauer and Morneau long term. Then find them an ace and keep Nathan. That Young deal was horrible. As far as Santana he`s been good for the Mets .... all things considered.

When I saw the byline I thought it was Felipe Lopez, because he pulled a hamstring last night.
Now I can relax; it's an easterner!
