A contract extension for Kansas City GM Dayton Moore is "done," according to a major-league source.Moore's original contract ran through 2010, and the source did not know how many years the extension would cover.
This will create much anguish for those who focus on Moore's moves the past year and their horrendous performance the past 3 1/2 months (31-67 after an 18-11 start).
I still maintain it was not such a bad idea to trade middle relievers (Ramon Ramirez and Leo Nunez) for every-day players (Coco Crisp and Mike Jacobs). Signing Jose Guillen, Ron Mahay, Horacio Ramirez, Kyle Farnsworth and Willie Bloomquist were more predictably bad.
But the Royals believe they have the base of a decent rotation with Zack Greinke, Gil Meche, Luke Hochevar and Kyle Davies and some prospects in the low minors.
The crux of the matter is that Kansas City has not had a winning record since 2003 and hasn't won more than 83 games since 1993. And ownership pinched pennies in every part of baseball operations, severely handicapping Allard Baird as GM, until opening its Wal-Mart wallet once hiring Moore in June 2006.So the team has been run with some degree of freedom from severe financial constraints for just three years. Maybe it isn't time to judge Moore just yet.

I long for the glory days of the KC Royals or at least something to cheer for. It if unbelieveable that ownership of any professional team not alone a team of the Royals stature in the 70's and 80's would let a team become so miserable and for so long. If an owner doesn't want to spend the money to put at least a half way decent team on the field then sell the team. Please Mr. owner sell the Royals to somebody that can afford to own a major league team.

Since when has Mike Jacobs been an everyday player? The list of problems with Moore is a mile long. He shouldn't be canned right now, but an extension here is as bad as K-State extending Ron Prince before last season.

Moore deserves an extension despite those who impatiently would like his head on a platter. But the Royals are a much, much better organization than when he took over dispite this years record. Moore provides the best hope for long term success of the Royals organization with minor league talent pushing the line-up rather than talent thinning, roster altering trades. Moore's decision is with Hillman-can he produce the kind of team than Royal's fans deserve. Truthfully, this years team, even with all of the injuries, is at least 12 to 15 games better than the record that has been posted. Should that that be put on Moore's doorstep too, other than the decision that he has to make when he evaluates the performance of the coaching staff?
Be patient folks. Good times are coming back to KC! Just not this year.

What minor league talent is pushing the lineup? The Royals haven't debuted a rookie all year. They haven't won this year and most likely won't the next few years because he has stubbornly hung on to veterans that could have been traded for minor league players who could help when the Royals might be able to compete.
