SAN FRANCISCO -- Randy Johnson, who has been out for the past two months with a torn rotator cuff, was activated by the Giants after Tuesday night's game. Johnson will join the Giants bullpen."It's a golden bullet for us," starter Barry Zito said. "We're excited."
The Giants had not planned to active Johnson until this weekend, at the earliest, but they changed course on Tuesday because right-hander Justin Miller was still bothered by a sore elbow. Miller was placed on the 60-day disabled list, ending his season.
Johnson, 46, has made 10 regular season relief appearances in his career. He said he'd be able to adjust to the new role, including getting loose quickly.
It is unclear just how the Giants would use Johnson initially. Left-hander Jeremy Affeldt has pitched well this year, so at best Johnson would become the No. 2 lefty in the bullpen.

It shows what a class guy Randy Johnson is ... instead of calling it a season he is coming into the clubhouse to work and earn his money in the clinch! That has to inspire his fellow Giants! The Giants pitching staff is looking good right now ... Penny was a great pickup and some the young kids up getting a look are impressive! Keep hitting and we might see a playoff in SF soon! There is not a pitching staff even close to having the starting rotation that the Giants have with Lincecum, Cain, Zeto, Penny and Sanchez. I hope they knock off the Rockies tonight and make a race of it!
