Jorge Posada will pay the price for his role in the brawl between the Yankees and Blue Jays Tuesday night. The New York catcher has been suspended for three games and fined for his actions by Major League Baseball.Posada elected to begin serving his suspension immediately.
Jesse Carlson, the Toronto reliever who was the other party at the center of the bench-clearing scuffle, will begin serving a three-game suspension for his role in the incident Wednesday night.
Carlson's suspension was first reported by MLB.com.
The Yankees' Shelley Duncan was also suspended for three games, but he has elected to appeal.
Posada sparked the brawl when he brushed past Carlson after scoring a run in the eighth inning of the Yankees' 10-4 loss to the Blue Jays, raising the ire of the Toronto reliever. Earlier in the inning, Carlson threw behind the New York backstop, a move many saw as retaliation.
Two Blue Jays -- Edwin Encarnacion and Aaron Hill -- were hit by pitches earlier in the game.
Home plate umpire Jim Joyce was critical of Posada's actions after the game.
"As he ran past Carlson, he gave him a little shove with his elbow. It was very unsportsmanlike," Joyce told a pool reporter. "It was a cheap shot."
Toronto catcher Rod Barajas, New York hitting coach Kevin Long and New York reliever Edwar Ramirez were also fined for their roles in the brawl.

It may be a blessing. Four days rest could be a good thing.
Here's hoping Beckett beans him with a fastball in the playoffs.
It's so unlike Posada. He usually breaks up the brawls. Really disappointing
The whole incident was great to watch.
But it is pretty interesting that it happened between these two specific players.
Carlson is also a very cool and calm guy.
Beckett is more of a professional then that. He could care less about getting involved with other peoples buisness. He'll be concentrating on trying to help the Sox win. Most Sox fans are capable of having intelligent conversations (like myself) and hate to see a few make such a stupid comment. But I believe this to be the case with most teams fans. The majority are great, just a few that dont respect the game and sadly they tend to stick out
Beckett what does he have to due with this Boston people just can't keep there mouth shut God get a life this was about the Yankees not Boston
Too bad it wasnt a Boston player he was beating on.
I think that the person who started the brawl should get more days. And true Posada ussually tries to stop the brawl.
Heavy you are the one who needs to get a life, apparently you arent smart enough to read because if you were you would understand my previous point. Dont generalize all Sox fans because of idiots like d57. But then again your probably an idiot fan yourself. Becca...your comment is no better. Yankees and Red Sox are class organizations with for the most part class fans, too bad a few fools give a bad name to the true fans.
Go Sox ! Good luck to the other teams and here's to exciting playoff baseball
nice to hear areally good fan of the game and not the haters, thanks Mark, even tho i'm a yanks fan, i'd not have a problem sitting a game and cheering against each other then having a cold one afterwards. you'r right a few rotten fans make thousands of good ones look bad. cheers
Hey Mark,
Nice comment, I agree with you.
There are fans that are frustrated and unfulfilled in their lifestyle accomplishments.
Just look at some Little League managers and parents, their actions are deplorable.
Instead of enjoying the game, it is a moment to fill out their fatansies and their second ugly personality comes out.
Neverthless, enjoy the upcoming playoffs; it appears that the Sox and Yankees are headed for a another classic showdown.
Thanks gert and tony. I've never understood hate and ignorance just because wasnt a fan of a certain team. Yes I'm a Sox fan but if they dont make it I still want to see good baseball and certainly do not want to see another team's players get injured or suspended just so my fave team can win.
BOB WATSON, THE EX-YANKEE WOULD HAVE GIVEN ANOTHER TEAMS PLAYER 5 -6 GAMES. BECAUSE IT'S A YANKEE 3 GAMES. WATSON IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF AFIRMATIVE ACTION.
