Tim McCarverWhile making my daily attempt to read everything on the Internet, I came upon a link that took me completely by surprise. It was to a story in the Providence Journal entitled, "Tim McCarver sings the American songbook." I did a double-take, the double-took my double take. The Providence Journal is a real newspaper and there's an Amazon.com link to the CD. This is really real.

This information has overloaded my poor little brain. Tim McCarver is one of my least favorite baseball announcers of all-time, and one of the reasons I can watch a game with the volume on and never actually hear one word the announcers say. But it's one thing to make fun of his baseball commentating. Everyone does that. Can I actually make fun of the man's singing voice?

Well, actually, I can't. Dan Levy at the Sporting News has actually listened to the album and concludes, "McCarver can really sing" while one of the reviewers on Amazon (who may or may not be a cynical jerk, judging by his handle of "#1 McCarver Fan") declares, " His version of "This Will Be My Shining Hour" is destined to be a classic and would bring even Zeuss (sic) himself to tears."

To be honest, my interest has been piqued. I immediately checked iTunes, hoping I would be able to buy one of his songs for a buck and hear for myself. No dice. I then scoured YouTube, hoping there was video of him singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame at a Cubs game or something. Again, nothing. If I wasn't certain that this odd, brief obsession with hearing Tim McCarver sing will have completely left me within three hours, I would honestly consider buying the CD.

Unfortunately, I can't offer you a review of McCarver's singing voice. What I can offer you, however, is an amazing YouTube clip of McCarver in a Phillies uniform in 1980, cutting a promo for Welcome Back, Kotter. Don't say I never do anything for you.
