The final six games of the 2009 season for the Cleveland Indians will be the final six games of manager Eric Wedge's tenure as manager as well. The team announced on Wednesday that they have relieved Wedge and his entire coaching staff of their duties, effective at the end of this season. A press conference has been scheduled for 1:30 at Progressive Field to make the announcement. The news doesn't come as much of a surprise with the Indians currently battling to stay out of last place in the AL Central when the season began with expectations that they'd be contending for the division title.
Wedge took over the Indians managerial job in 2003, taking over for Charlie Manuel after he was fired in the 2002 season. In his seven seasons as Indians manager Wedge has compiled a record of 560-568 and won only one division title in 2007.
In that season the Indians went to the ALCS and had a three games to one lead on the Boston Red Sox before losing three straight and being eliminated. Since then the upward trend of the team under Wedge has gone completely downhill, as the Indians had to put on a late charge at the end of last season just to finish at .500 and they're currently 28 games under this season.
As our own Jeff Fletcher points out, Wedge is now the third manager of the four who reached the LCS in 2007 to no longer have a job, joining Colorado's Clint Hurdle and Arizona's Bob Melvin.

this is misfiled. It should be under "minor-leagues".
Good one.....and I was hoping this story had to do with the Mess....er, I mean Mets.
Hope they get someone who has some fire. The owners are first rate people, and Cleveland is a worthy city.
U ever think its not only the coaching staff? The last manager was fired too. Just replacing the coaching staff isnt going to win a world series. The owners need to step up as well with their next coaching staff.
the Dolans are the worst owners in MLB. They may be nice people but they are horrible owners.
about time.
Did he trade away their top players who are still fairly young and couldve built a winning team around? How can any manager do a good job in that situation?
Wedge s the worst mgr that Cleveland ever had.His shuffling of players caused a real mess. Now if Sapiro, and Willis get fired ( and they) there is only one more hurdle.Dolan must sell the team to someone that will put money out to buy players and keep the good ones they have TONY A
clevelands GM'S have probably traded away more world series than any team in baseball. Started with frank lane and is seemingingly continuing with sapiro or shapiro or whatever the hell his name is. When ya trade top shelf players for "players to be named" ya git what ya pay for. If ur gonna fire wedge fire the jerk that gits the players for him
Mangini, you're next!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know the teams that are struggling need to make changes, but wait until the winter. How do you fire managers that have 6-13 games left to play this season. It seems like a message is being sent so I guess the Mets will get rid of Jerry Manuel on Christmas day.
About time he's a jerk!!
Let's get a petition out to get OMAR VIZQUEL back to Cleveland to manage!!!
Omar would be a great idea
Wedge is a very good manager. Just had a lot of bad luck with a team on a limited payroll.
The move will allow Wedge to focus on his other career as a Dick Sargent impersonator.
i'm bewitched by your statement
Mark Shapiro should have preceded Wedge out the door.
As a Red Sox fan, I need to thank somebody for V-Mart. Whoever let this guy go deserves a lot of thanks from Red Sox Nation because, in my opinion, he's the best!
exactly he's the ultimate class act.
And he's probably one of the few pro athletes that actually wanted to stay in Cleveland. I mean the guy was in tears when they told him he was traded to Boston. Not to mention he was our best player.
