At last the World Series, baseball's crown jewel event, is upon us, and the matchup is awfully hard to beat, even if it tilts toward those with an East Coast bias.

The Turnpike Tussle between the Phillies and the Yankees could be one of the best World Series in recent memory, and we could use one. The Fall Classic hasn't gone the distance since 2002, and it hasn't even gone beyond five games since 2003. Philly and New York both have left-handed aces, outstanding defenses and deep and punishing lineups, hinting that this time around the World Series could go long.

Isn't that what we all want -- Phils and Yanks fans excluded? After the jump, get all the latest news and information on the Series in addition to our staff's predictions.

Predictions

  • Josh Alper | Yankees in 7:
The offenses pretty much cancel each other out, but the Yankees have the deeper, better pitching staff from their first starter all the way down to Mariano Rivera.
  • Knox Bardeen | Yankees in 6:
Since Aug. 1 the Yankees have won seven more games and lost nine fewer than the Phillies. They are hotter at the moment and they have a much more decided home-field advantage.
  • Jeff Fletcher | Yankees in 7:
The teams match up pretty well, spot for spot, but home-field advantage plus Mariano Rivera is reason enough to give the Yanks the edge.
  • Tom Fornelli | Yankees in 6:
These are two similar offenses, but I like the Yankees' starting pitching better and the back end of the Yankee 'pen is more reliable. Bullpens will be crucial in this series.
  • Dan Graziano | Phillies in 5:
They're still the champs, and they play like they know it. CC Sabathia won't scare them, Yankee Stadium won't scare them, and once they take one on the road they'll have a familiar feeling that they have (and the vast majority of these Yankees have not) had before.
  • Pat Lackey | Yankees in 6:
Everything about the Yankees is just a little deeper than the Phillies. This pick comes with the caveat that I haven't picked the Phillies to win a playoff series once in the past two seasons and that I'm positive that by picking the Yankees, I've just clinched a second World Series for the Phils.
  • Andrew Johnson | Phillies in 7:
The dramatic October victories and mental toughness add up to a team that is greater than the sum of its parts, not that the parts aren't awfully impressive by themselves. The Phillies' lineup is right there with the Yankees' and, in case anyone forgot, Cliff Lee is having a better month than CC Sabathia.
  • Jay Mariotti | Yankees in 6:
Alex Rodriguez is rewriting his life's script, East Coast weather will keep CC Sabathia rested, Mariano Rivera is dope when Brad Lidge is dust and they've forgotten how to lose in the House That Ruthlessness Built.
  • Terence Moore | Yankees in 5:
The Yankees were destined for a 27th world championship even before Derek Jeter declared before the start of the playoffs, "Let's win one for the Steinbrenner!" Or something like that. Not only are the Yankees playing for aging George, but they were baseball's best team during the regular season, and nothing has changed during the postseason. It might take them six games if they get bored.
  • Frankie Piliere | Phillies in 7:
I'll take the offense that's rolling right now. It'll be a toss up, but the Phillies right-handed hitters will give New York problems. Jayson Werth and Carlos Ruiz will be huge for them.
  • Ed Price | Phillies in 6:
Why? No good reason. The Yankees are the better baseball team on paper. But the Phillies haven't seemed to show much regard for paper the last two seasons.
  • Matt Snyder | Yankees in 7:
It's going to be the best World Series in years, but, in the end, Alex Rodriguez is going to be the conquering hero in Game 7 in New York.
