NEW YORK -- The slew of left-handed boppers. More speed than you think, along with slick gloves everywhere. Another dose or two of Cliff Lee.From the start of Saturday night's Game 3 in Philadelphia until whenever the last pitch of the World Series takes place, the New York Yankees will have much to worry about regarding the Philadelphia Phillies.
Oh, the Yankees still will win it all. They have several boppers of their own -- well, if this A-Rod stops resembling that other A-Rod when it comes to vanishing or prospering in October. Plus, despite Lee's Sandy Koufax routine, the Yankees have better starting pitchers. They also have those pinstriped ghosts, their Gipper in George Steinbrenner and the incomparable Mariano Rivera.
That said, the Yankees must understand something more striking about the Phillies than what I just wrote: the Phillies aren't scared.
The Yankees should be, but only to scare themselves straight. And, no, it doesn't matter that Pedro Martinez became one of their children again on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium to even things at 1-1. First, there was the Phillies' 6-1 laugher in Game 1 courtesy of Chase Utley's bat and Lee's arm. Then, down the stretch of the Yankees' 3-1 victory in this one, the Phillies kept tossing dirt out of their grave. They had the tying runs on base with one out in the eighth inning against Rivera. In the ninth, Raul Ibanez ripped a two-out double before Rivera became His Awesomeness again with a game-ending strikeout of Matt Stairs."Coming in here, splitting the series, it happened. We won one of two games against them, but we wanted to sweep"
-- Matt Stairs
It didn't matter. Stairs resembled nearly everybody else in the visitors' clubhouse afterward. He shrugged, and then he said with a pleasant dose of defiance, "Well, it's funny that we had such a great year, but the Yankees are considered the favorites. We don't feel like we're inferior. We feel like we have a great team, and that we can hit with anybody and pitch with anybody.
"Coming in here, splitting the series, it happened. We won one of two games against them, but we wanted to sweep."
So much for the Yankees huffing and puffing and threatening to blow away the supposedly underdog Phillies mentally as well as physically. Given the spunk that the Phillies have shown thus far after two World Series games in the Bronx -- where they threatened to stop between innings to spit at those Yankee plaques behind center field -- who said these guys were underdogs, anyway?
"We've heard it," said Jimmy Rollins, the little mouth that roared so loudly before the World Series (he picked the Phillies in five games, no longer than six) that a New York tabloid declared on its back pages, "Shut Him Up!" Added Rollins, "We don't feel that way [as underdogs], and that's really the most important thing, that we don't consider ourselves underdogs. We're not going out there trying to prove anything, just going out there trying to win four games."
The Phillies have three more to go. So do the Yankees, which means the 2009 world championship will belong to the team that blinks last.
That's why Game 3 is so huge. Every World Series game is huge. But the Phillies can snatch home-field advantage back from the Yankees Saturday night inside of their cozy ballpark if Cole Hamels returns from Steve Blass territory. Just last season, he was magnificent -- especially in the postseason, when he finished as the most valuable player in the National League Championship Series and the World Series. He was 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five postseason starts.
This year? Brutal (1-1, 6.75 ERA in three starts). That's opposed to Andy Pettitte, the Yankees' scheduled starter for Saturday night who won the Yankees' series-clinching victory over the Los Angeles Angels in the ALCS. His 16 postseason victories are more than anybody in history, but you know what? The Phillies aren't scared.
Remember, too, the Phillies are the defending world champions, and no NL team has won the World Series in consecutive years since the 1975-1976 Cincinnati Reds of Big Red Machine fame. In other words, the Phillies aren't scared, because they are doing everything they can to have a legacy of their own.
"No, not really," said Rollins, causing eyebrows to rise. That was until he followed those words with another reason for the Yankees to be scared: The Phillies get it, because Rollins added, "We still have so much work to do, I believe, and I believe everyone in the clubhouse feels the same way. You start looking at yourself and being content and getting happy, you find yourself sliding the wrong way quickly."
Sounds like Derek Jeter. After all, the Yankees captain keeps saying during the postseason that his team only focuses on the game at hand. That means the Yankees and the Phillies have the same obsession with focus.
That means this will be a tight World Series.
That means the Yankees will win it by a Rivera cut fastball.

The Yankees have not used Chamberlain or Mitre. Why is that? Do They not have Confidence in Them? You Can't win a World Series using only 3 Pitchers.
Let Sabbathia Pitch game 4. The Phillies own him.
Props to AJ Burnette for out out pitching Pedro
No Props to Charlie for not taking out Pedro in the 6. Charlie Trust the Bullpen. Also You should have started Rollins and Victorino on a 3-2 Count w/ 1 out. The inning would have been kept alive.
Go Phillies! Phillies are 11-1 at home dating back to last post season.

Both teams are competitive and experienced.
The Phillies should have been labeled the "favorites" after all they are the defending champs. Neither team is intimidated by the other.
But to say that the Phillies "let the Yankees win"
is absurd. Both teams have gotten superb starting pitching so far.
That alone will determine the evntual champ.
But, to make motormouth predictions and talk with macho bravado like Rollins and Stairs and even Manuel has done is a sure sign of deep insecurity.
Act like you have won it before (oh that is right they did win it last year)

First of all chabak, the phillies do not own sabathia. about 4 hits off him? 2 hr yes, but hardly ownage. the trouble started with the relief in game 1.
The phillies are a good team and the yankees know this. but the yankees sure as hell deserve it more this year.
And tonytiger is right; it looks like money may very well buy class, because apparently the phillies are lacking in that respect compared to the yankees in this series.

um, actually, look at CC's history with the phillies. the yanks might be pedro's daddy, but CC is the phillies bitch. his history versus the phils is not impressive at all and if i remember correctly, does not have a winning record against them. he's a great pitcher, there is no denying that at all. but thus far, he has yet to figure out the phils. he did give up two homeruns to the same guy.
and to say the yanks deserve it more, why? because of their history? and the yankees have class? seriously? you think a-fraud is a classy guy? only guys i respect on the yanks are rivera, jeter and posoda because they've earned that respect. they're great players and i am NOT a yankees fan by any means. but they're really great players that go about the game the right way. the other guys on that team are very suspect. i didn't mention pettite on purpose because with him admitting to using, i'm just not sure about him. he's a good pitcher, but there is that cloud over him. granted, he has said he used for an ailment and then stopped, but who knows. not saying the phillies are saints. look at jc romero. who knows what his deal is because that story keeps changing. but the fact that the yankees have bought their team doesn't give them class. neither does growing a team like the phillies did it.
i'm a phillies fan. nothing will change that. and i hope they win. but if they don't, so be it. but i'm not going to say they deserve to win it. the yanks are a step up from the devil rays. one thing i am proud of the phillies for is the fact they aren't intimidated by the yankees like the angels were. these guys aren't just going to roll over. and if you think that, then you're going to feel like you did when the red sox won 4 in a row to beat them or when the marlins beat them in the series. philly gets a lot of flak for being crazy sports fans, but we're very knowledgeable. and some are actually humble. the phillies haven't won anything yet and they won't til they win 4 games. and that's how it should be. may the best team win

Listen you bunch of know nuthin's. First, every game belongs to its self. No matter what happened yesterday or fifty years ago, it doesn't affect the game at the moment. Everybody talks about the past. This happened or that happened. Yesterdays game don't mean nuthin other than they are tied. Tomorrow s game means only that tomorrows game. If whatever pitcher is on that team will win. It starts with the pitcher. It doesn't matter who is pitching at the moment. If a particular pitcher is on then chances are his team has a good chance to win that game. Not yesterdays. Baseball is about NOW. Not yeasterday or what he did 5 years ago against a particular person.
All I read and hear from all of you experts is about the PAST. The past is gone, never to come back again.
Now, as for Jimmy (the mouth) Rollins, he should take a lesson from the real pros and not brag about whose is bigger or who is better. When I last looked the Yankees had the BEST record in the sport so I guess they are the better team, but tell that to the Phillies or their fans and they would have you think that they are the greatest. In addition, the Phillies needed to get 2 outstanding pitchers ( Cliff and Pedro ) to BAIL out this mediocre team. 2 x american leaguers. Along with the other help from the A.L.
So who is kidding who?
Big mouth Rollins would have you think he is the best SS of all time. Second rate at best.
True the Phillies have a better outfield but aside from that the Yankees are better rounded. The Phillies could get lucky and get great pithching and win in a short series, cause anything can happen. I doubt it because the cream will rise. YANKEES in six.
