The New York Yankees parade for 2009 will be held Friday morning, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg announced after the Yankees wrapped up their 27th World Series championship. Friday's ticker-tape parade will begin on Broadway at Battery Place at 11 AM ET and continue northbound up the Canyon of Heroes to Chambers Street. After that, Mayor Bloomberg will present the Yankees with the keys to the city.
All pretty standard stuff. But of course, there's also the mayoral bet to be settled. And if Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter doesn't want to get dirty, he better bring his apron to the Bronx.
See, Nutter made a side bet with Bloomberg before the World Series and now will head to New York to help paint a mural on the side of a recreation center wearing a Yankees jersey.
Here was the statement Bloomberg issued after the Yanks' 7-3 victory:
"Congratulations to the Yankees for bringing the world championship back home to New York City, where it belongs," said Bloomberg. "The Yankees have thrilled the city all year long with their come-from-behind victories and never-say-die attitude, and they did it again in the World Series. What's sweeter than a World Series won at home? The only thing that comes close is a ticker-tape parade up the Canyon of Heroes, and that's exactly what New Yorkers will get on Friday. The Phillies were a tough team to beat, but I must admit I look forward to seeing Mayor (Michael) Nutter in pinstripes as he joins me and some of our public school students as we paint the Albert Einstein School in the Bronx."Yankee fans will surely be in a lovable (and/or rambunctious) mood as the parade festivities kick off. Waiting nine years for another World Series championship may seem like nothing to fans of other baseball teams, but Yankee fans expect excellence from their clubs. The Yankees' last title of course came via a Subway Series victory over the Mets in 2000.
Speaking of love, how about this for something to celebrate: According to the AP report, a man used a television blimp at Yankee Stadium during the game to propose to his girlfriend. A television blimp circled above the stadium during the entire game, and at one point the electronic lettering on the side beamed "Lisa, will you marry me? Love John."Way to go, John. Just don't wear a white pinstriped tuxedo to your wedding. Girls hate that stuff.
The blimp circled the stadium again, and on the next round it brought the answer: She said "yes."
Like John and Lisa, hundreds of fans were already rejoicing up and down down the streets of N.Y. into the early hours of Thursday morning. As a matter of fact, I just overheard some random inebriated man scream "Eyyyyyyy!! We got it!!" at 5 AM outside my Astoria, Queens, apartment window.
"[We have the] greatest fans in the world," Derek Jeter said. "I can't say enough about them. They've been here since Day 1. People were always talking about our new stadium, 'Would it be the same?' Well, we got the same fans."
So far, there have been no early reports of disturbances related to the Yankees victory, according to New York City police. Several patrol cars and officers were on watch at street corners just to be sure.
Stay safe this weekend, New York. And party hard.

Hey Nancy... show me in the rule book where the ONLY team allowed to spend money is the Yankees. If Bill Gates bought a team, he could do the same. To bad the other cheap owners aren't for winning, just for lining their pockets. GO YANKEES !!!

And the 100 million the Yankees pay in luxury tax where does that go? what do the teams that suck do with the money?? They put it in their pockets and dont spend 1 dime on building their teams up. Yankees draw 4 million at home and 4 million on the road, what does that tell ya. It tells ya not only in the Bronx do the fans come out to see them but they do across the country as well. Any good company invests in ITSELF and when you do, you get the results same as the Yankee's do. Now for all you 2nd rate fans of losing teams, don't you wish your team was GREAT like OURS....CHA CHA CHA..

Nancy, I do understand your envy !!!!
Is your congratulations real or toungue in cheek?
This team is comprised of a lot of good guys.
The Yankees did spend, so what. The spent on the right guys and let the stiffs like Giambi, Abrue and couple of non contributors out the door.
Texeira was a wonderful addition; the Red Sox had him but lost him. CC was better than advertised.
Swisher was an inexpensive addition via a trade.
Burnett contributed to the pitching staff.
The best signing this year---PETTITE, an original core with Jeter,Posada, and the superlative MARIANO !!!!!!!!!
These guys play the game right, always have, with class, professionalism and total dedication to their craft. No pompous claims, no disrespecting the opponent, no fake gyrations after a doing their job. The are admired by Yankee fans and by most knowledgeable fans.
True ambassadors for baseball!!!!

I think anyone with the means would do the same as if you own a business you spend what you have to to be a success. If they can build a winning team with their money, good for them. We won, get over it and don't forget it has been 9 years and if money could buy wins then we would be doing it every year. Go Yankees, your the best!!!!

Congrats Yankees, you were the better team this year!,...as far as Jeter saying "we have the greatest fans in the world", I've been asking all series and no one has the ansurer, why at every Yankees home game, there were 100's + of seats empty? seems to me the greatest fans should be able to fill a 50,000 seat stadium,?..even last night, series clinching game, tons of empty seats, it is baffleing and for New Yorkers embarassing. it would be interesting for a NY reporter to look into this and see what the reasons could be. and for anyone that doubts this, just watch any replay of the games and scan the seats, shocking, embarassing.

If you noticed a lot of empty seats--it may have been due to the fact that it costs a small fortune to buy those seats. I don't know about most people, but in this economy, I would be hard pressed to come up with a few thousand dollars per ticket to purchase World Series tickets, and I am a lifelong Yankees fan. I did see two regular season games this year, and paid over one thousand dollars(for a total of four tickets)per game. I would have loved to see one of the series games, but the price was way to steep for my budget. Hopefully, I'll plan ahead for next year's World Series, as this is clearly the the beginning of a new dynasty!

Well, the game was sold out, empty seats could be attributed to people buying tickets hoping to sell them, and no one paying $1,000's for tickets... but i don't have any basis for this, just a theory.

I have a feeling those seats are held by people hawking them at very steep price and would not sell for less (after making thousands on tickets sold). They know there are people waiting for them to drop the price but like to stiff these people.

the reason those seats are empty is because they ate 10000 a game, also, i was there last night and didnt see an empty seat anywhere so idk what you are talkin about

TO RYNK:: To inform you, I was at the game last night and trust me when i tell you, those seats are NOT empty..The one's you may have seen empty may have been empty for only short periods of time as fans in the NEW stadium get up and come back many times,,ESPECIALLY when later in the game and its a BLOW OUT..The Yankees don't draw the most of any team in baseball for no reason, 4,000,000 plus at home..There was many people standing as well. The BEST team in baseball has the BEST fans, HOME & AWAY...What is embarassing is when you go by what YOU see on TV..DID YOU happen to see the stands in the bottom of the 9th??? OF course you didn't..The stands were packed well after the game was over too..Now go do YOUR research and listen to Idiot JOE BUCK...Maybe watch the parade tomorrow and see how many Are NOT there...AS*H*LE

Unlike many other cities, New Yorkers don't set their city on fire when we win championships. No need to mention about "early police reports". We know how to have fun, we can handle crowds and we dont' **** where we sleep!
