The New York Yankees are coming off a season in which they won 103 games in the regular season, and capped it off with the 27th World Series title in franchise history. Normally that's a recipe that leads to a whole lot of contract extensions, and with three key components like Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Joe Girardi all in the final year of their contracts, you'd expect all three to sign new deals shortly. They won't be.
According to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, all three will have to play out the final year of their deal before the team sits down to talk.
"I don't think you can separate one from the other," Cashman explained. "I am not saying they are the same, but the questions will come, 'If you did one, why didn't you do the other?' If this was Kansas City, it would be different - but it's not."None of this comes as a surprise. Hal Steinbrenner told FanHouse's Ed Price the same thing back in December.
"I don't do extensions," said Steinbrenner then. "It's a policy I have, one I've always had."
You wouldn't think that this would serve as a distraction for any of the three this season, either. For Girardi, it doesn't matter what kind of contract he has, the minute the Yankees go on a five-game losing streak fans in New York will call for his head. It's just the nature of the beast. As for Rivera and Jeter, they're two Yankee legends. Once the season is over, they'll get their new deals. It's just not feasible to think that the Yankees would want either player to finish their career anywhere else, and the players probably feel the same way.

owner is right no question
JETER AND RIVERA SHOULD RETIRE, THEY ARE BOTH GETTING OLD..............THEY BOTH SHOULD GIVE SOMEBODY YOUNGER THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHINE..............
Your and your post are a joke. In fact you may be learning disabled or suffering from arrested development...... so I apologize.
Jeter and Riviera you genius both came off two more great seasons.
Maybe you're a Mets or Phillies fan. Here's a factoid for you .... a recent report indicated that the highest concentration in the U.S. live in Philly. That must be where you're from. Good luck.
yeah retire after very good seasons and World Series ring, yeah thats what they should do lmao
You are a horse's ass. Retire just to move out of the way? Only an uneducated idiot would say something as unthoughtful as that. Moron.
THE YANKESS WON IT ALL IN 2009. NOW THE DOWNFALL BEGINS THEY WONT DO IT AGAIN FOR ANOTHER 5 YEARS OR MORE.
I'll take one every 5 years. NO PROBLEM.
They didn't win it. They bought it. Get your facts straight.
JUST----PLAY BALL!!! Everything else will take care of itself!! You don't become the universe's most successful franchise from the beginning of time by being cheap or frugal!! THANK GOD FOR MAKING YANKEE PLAYER'S, YANKEE FANS, AND MOST OF ALL THE YANKEE OWNERS WHO CURRENTLY HAPPEN TO BE 'THE STEINBRENNER FAMILY"!! THANK YOU GOD!!
The Yankees are good and I don't deny that, but the arrogance of the fans gags me.
Most knowledgeable fans in ALL of sports. You must be from Philly too.
I noticed your name is "Leon" ..... would your last name happen to be Spinks?
This would account for your intellectual deficiency and your characterization of Yankee fans as arrogant. Here is a factoid for you Spinks ..... the Philly fan base is without question the dumbest, most disrespectful, lewd, inconsiderate, uncouth, ignorant in sports. I have friends in Ardmore who went to the Philly NLCS last year and they have two youngsters, one girl 8 & 1 boy 11, and when they all came up to Yankee stadium for the series the kids commented, as did the parents how raucous and profane the Philly fans were leaving the ballpark. By contrast they said when we left the stadium how respectful and decent the fans were even with my four friends wearing Phillies caps.
That's the truth.
Hey leon, I know a good portion of Yankee fans are arrogant, but it's hard not to get defensive when at away games, stadiums chant "Yankees suck." Also tell that arrogance to Philadelphia, who practically harassed the whole Yankee team when they arrived in Pennsylvania for the world series. Excellence naturally begets arrogance...what's everyone else's excuse?
And there's no good reason to let Jeter and Rivera retire yet. They're still great performers, especially Rivera, and it would a stupid decision to not renew contracts because younger players need to shine. Talent, prowess, and performers do that. Just look at Texiera and Cano.
The Yankees in the past didn't ever lose a player who played for them so well, I wouldn't be concernd too much about Jeter or Rivera....Do you think that a Franchise like the Yankees would ever let them get away for nothing????...Jeter is not old enough to hang them up and he's got GOOD years ahead of him {Barring any Injuries} and Rivera is just about 40 years old and he'll pick his time when he chooses...I would not think he would want to pitch for any other team anyway....One more thing, the Yankees have good brains behind them and there's plenty of Ballplayers who pick each other up when they have to...I do wish that they can get Joe Mauer in a trade or Free agency to round out pefection in every position. Posada played many GOOD years with the Yankees but now I think he may be good as a DH to further his career in Pinstripes..Good Luck to all of them in 2010.
"I do wish that they can get Joe Mauer in a trade or Free agency to round out pefection in every position."
I would replace both corner outfielders well before I would replace Posada. Winn is a weak hitter and Swisher may be good still, but slumped badly this past postseason. Not that I'd call either a "weak spot", but they can certainly be upgraded
one every 5 years ammounts to 20 in a century... not a bad tally and we'd still me a hell of alot better then the redsox
Frustration is what all the Dead Sox fans have. They know they can't keep up with the Yankees from year to year. The Sox won a couple of world series in the last 6 years, and the world is supposed to stop and take notice...... Now that the Yanks won in "09, all the crap from Boston will boil over again......Living in Massachusetts, i have lots of fun being a Yankee fan....The frustration of Sox fans is fun to watch....Its actually comical.
