Emil Brown Has Female Troubles

While he's in Oakland now, Athletics outfielder Emil Brown spent the last three seasons living in Kansas City as a member of the Royals, and apparently he got himself into a bit of trouble while living in KC. Back in January of 2007 24-year old Jennifer Haigh accused Brown of sexual assault, but instead of pressing charges against him, the two allegedly worked out a settlement that would keep Haigh quiet about the whole situation.

Well, now Haigh is saying that Brown hasn't paid up and she's taking him to court ($).
Emil Brown, an outfielder now with the Oakland A's, faces accusations that he breached a contract in which he was to pay more than $75,000 for a January 2007 incident. Brown, 33, who played for three years in Kansas City, joined Oakland as a free agent prior to this season. In a vague breach of contract lawsuit filed on Thursday, Jennifer Haigh, 24, claimed Brown owes her an undisclosed amount as part the deal they reached after a "pre-suit mediation process."
Now it should be pointed out that this is the second time this case has been taken to court, and that the first time it was dismissed by the judge because of Haigh's questionable character. And by questionable character, I mean her proclivity for lying. Apparently Haigh has lied to the Missouri DMV a few times about her address and to her employer about here whereabouts in March 2007. What any of that has to do with her claims against Brown, I'm not sure. What I do know, is whether these allegations against Brown are true or not, this is probably not how he was hoping to spend his four days off.

The A's Aren't Done Yet

For most teams, trading away their best pitcher an their best hitter for ten prospects would be enough moves for one offseason. Most teams are not the Oakland A's. On Friday, they signed former Pirate and Royal Emil Brown to help fill the void in the outfield created by the Nick Swisher trade. That immediately sparked rumors that the A's were looking to send Mark Kotsay to the Braves. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, team president David Forst won't deny those rumors and Kotsay sounds pretty excited about it:
"There's nothing official," Kotsay emphasized. "But there is a possibility. And I've always liked to play against Bobby Cox, I have a lot of respect for him as a manager. He's got a competitive club day in and day out. If I'm going to be traded, Atlanta is a good situation."

[...]

"Obviously, the direction of the A's is that they're in transition," he said. "Sometimes, that's a difficult place to be for an older player. But that's not to say the A's aren't going to win - they still have a quality group there and they've just gone out and acquired a lot of talent. If that talent pans out, they're going to be good, and you can't put a timetable on talent. It could be sooner than people think."
The A's target is rumored to be Joey Devine, a 24-year old reliever who dominated at AA and AAA last year with a 1.89 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP, and a crazy 78 strikeouts in 58 innings. He's struggled in the majors (22 walks in 19 and 2/3 big league innings from 2005-2007), but he's still got a pretty high ceiling as a big league reliever. Would this trade satiate Billy Beane's rebuilding hunger or will he keep going? Only time will tell.

Emil Brown, Caught on Tape!

There's good video, there's great video, and then there's video of Emil Brown hitting a Kansas City television reporter in the face with a pellet gun, which we told you about yesterday.

SInce no one was seriously injured, feel free to laugh. And laugh you will.

Emil Brown Will Bust a Pellet in You, Son

When you're the Kansas City Royals, you do everything you can to try to have fun at the ballpark ... because if winning is fun for you, that solution's not really in the picture very often.

What does Emil Brown do? He shoots a pellet gun around the locker room, or at least he did until he hit a local TV reporter in the face with a pellet and felt awful:
A team spokesman said Brown didn't mean to shoot KMBC sports reporter Karen Kornacki with the plastic pellet gun. Brown started in left field Friday night against the Texas Rangers.

"It was certainly an accident," Royals spokesman David Holtzman said. "He wasn't shooting at anybody."

Kornacki was interviewing shortstop Tony Pena Jr. before the game when she felt the pellet hit near her left eye, said Gary Roberts, KMBC's assistant news director. Kornacki ended the interview and left the locker room immediately.

"I was just messing around in here," Brown said. "I feel terrible about it. Karen is one of the nicest persons that I've met, especially as far as the media is concerned. This happening to her, I feel absolutely awful about it."

Oh, Emil; try to keep the pellet gun in the locker while the reporters are there, huh? I know it's hard to keep ish from poppin' off when you're in the Crown City (what what what!) ... but give it a shot for us. Not literally.

Emil Brown Has Thin Skin

Emil Brown has led the Royals in RBI's the last two seasons with 86 and 81 in '05 and '06 respectively. The Royals know that he can handle a bat reasonably well, but they also notice that Brown has trouble with defense at times. Unfortunately for Brown, the media tends to focus on that as well, and he's getting pretty tired of hearing about it.

Brown went on a rant Monday before the Royals game that you get the feeling he's been holding back for a few years now.

"I hear it all of the time," Brown said. "He's an adventure out there. Why? Because I'm actually trying to make plays happen?

"It isn't an adventure for (Twins outfielder) Torii Hunter when he dives for a ball and misses it. Then, it's, 'Oh, he just missed it.' He gets the benefit of the doubt because he's a Gold Glover. But it's an adventure when I do it."

Hey, Emil? I think you answered your own question, buddy. The reason nobody gives Torii Hunter crap when he dives and misses a fly ball is because he's a Gold Glover, and he has made that catch many times before. On the other hand, when you charge after a ball like a wounded moose and then fall on your face as the ball goes flying by, you are going to get criticized.

It's just the way things work, but don't fret. There is something you have in common with Torii Hunter. You're both pissed off at the media right now.
